Jane Asher in 'Deep End'
Jane Asher, best known as Paul McCartney's longtime girlfriend and fiancé for a spell, is an underrated actress; unable to step out of her superstar boyfriend's shadow. Her talent is best showcased in 1971's 'Deep End', written and directed by Jerzy Skolimowski.
The film follows Asher's Susan, a bathhouse attendant, co-worker, and object of obsession for the film's lead, 15-year-old, Mike, played by John Moulder-Brown. The film's tagline: If you can't have the real thing-you'll do all sorts of unreal things, perfectly describes the spiral that Mike falls into. Susan becomes an object he needs to control, rather than a human person.
The famous ending of Deep End combines images and colors we've previously seen: yellow, for Susan, the girl he can't have, blue, the water and the bathhouse where things are safe, and red, for his obsession and violent, sexual needs that arise. Primary colors represent three very human sides: sexual (id), individualism (ego), and the emotions that keep the others in check (super ego). Colors can show physiological states and can foreshadow upcoming themes.
Susan is a beautiful, witty style icon; a unique individual that shines above the rest. I've been dreaming of her iconic yellow, trench raincoat, white knee boots, and itty bitty floral dress since I first saw the movie in college. This piece is a fitting first; it was my desire for this outfit that drove me to start this blog. Thanks, Jane Asher.
For the very first time...we recreate this steamy bathhouse look:
The three most important pieces in this look are:
Patterned Mod Mini Dress. You can have fun wit the dress's pattern; just look for a short A-line or baby doll cut dress. Imagine dressing up in children's clothing; now think about that being the crux of 60's high fashion. For this look, stay away from large or complex patterns. Keep it simple with a small or medium sized, repeated pattern: like flowers, polka dots, etc. You don't want it to overshadow the coat; you want to compliment it.
Long Yellow Raincoat. It doesn't really matter the color, just make sure it goes with the color and pattern of the dress you've chosen. I bought the classic yellow, but pink would've been my second choice. Make sure it snaps down the front and isn't a poncho. You can probably get one at most supermarkets or with that Amazon Prime.
White Go-Go Boots. You can grab boots like these at any Halloween store or you can wait and hope to come across them in a thrift store. Unless you are a size 6, I've found it difficult to thrift shoes. A good substitute would be white knee high socks and light-colored shoes.
